One day, I was enjoying a leisurely walk when I noticed a man struggling to push a large trash roller-tote up his driveway. Usually, I wouldn’t think much of it, but this man was quite elderly and using a walker to get it back to the garage. As I was listening to my Christian playlist and having a meaningful conversation with God, I felt a strong sense of purpose to help. I quickened my pace, determined to assist this poor man in his time of need. After all, wouldn’t it be the compassionate thing to do?
However, as I reached the house, the man had already finished placing the roller cart in its designated spot. I felt a pang of guilt for not arriving sooner to offer my support.
But then, something unexpected happened. The man, with his own set of challenges and struggles, turned, walked across the street, and headed home. It turned out that I wasn’t meant to help him; instead, I was meant to learn from him. You see, sometimes, no matter how busy we are or what our own problems may be, it takes a simple act of kindness and grace to brighten someone else’s day. It can often be as simple as seeing the world around us differently and having a heart for serving others with whatever gifts we have to share.
